GTA 5 Rarest Cars: The 5 Hardest Vehicles to Find and How to Get Them
CONFIRMEDPublished 2026-09-09 · ⏱ 8 min
"Rarest car" lists are usually guesswork — this one is not. Every vehicle below is a documented case: none of them can simply be bought on an in-game website, and each one is locked behind a collectible reward, a mission, a rare spawn or an event that has already ended. The facts come from the GTA Wiki vehicle database (accessed September 9, 2026), the same community database behind our fastest cars guide. Rarity rankings are editorial; spawn conditions and availability are not.
What makes a car "rare" in GTA 5
Rarity in GTA 5 is not about price — it is about how a vehicle enters the game world. A car is rare when it is missing from every purchase website and appears only through one of these gates:
- Collectible rewards — earned by completing a long side-objective chain.
- Mission windows — obtainable only during or at the end of a specific mission.
- Rare spawns — no fixed location, but a documented set of conditions that make it appear.
- Ended events — vehicles that were sold for a limited time and then removed again.
Because GTA 5 and GTA Online are separate economies, a vehicle can be rare in one and ordinary in the other. All 295+ vehicles tracked on our GTA V vehicles hub are tagged CONFIRMED with their source; the five below are the ones collectors actually struggle with.
The Lost Slamvan — the rarest vehicle in GTA Online
The Vapid Lost Slamvan is the closest thing GTA Online has to a unicorn. This black, red-wheeled low-rider van (Muscle class) first appeared with the Heists update, where it existed in missions and the game files but could not be owned. That changed with The Diamond Casino & Resort update, which finally made it obtainable and customizable — through the casino's Lucky Wheel, and only through it.
The documented odds explain the legend: when the wheel lands on a Mystery Reward (roughly a 14.3% chance to draw from the vehicle category), there is only about a 0.72% chance that the vehicle is a Lost Slamvan. These are community-documented probabilities and approximate — but every source agrees on the practical conclusion: the Lost Slamvan is not sold on any website and does not spawn in traffic. For most players it remains a garage slot they will never fill.
The Space Docker — the 50-Spaceship-Parts reward
The BF Space Docker is the best-known story-mode rarity: a wildly modified Dune Buggy with trashcan "jet engines", wooden body panels and glowing blue wire that lights up at night — the reward for the game's longest collectible grind.
How it works, per the wiki's Locations section: after collecting all 50 Spaceship Parts, Franklin returns to Omega and completes the mission The Final Frontier. The Space Docker then appears at Omega's garage; it will not reappear there, but afterwards it is available as a "special vehicle" in each protagonist's garage in single-player. It is not for sale anywhere and never spawns as traffic. In GTA Online it is barely more accessible: the Arena War update (enhanced versions) added it as a Pegasus vehicle unlock at Sponsorship Tier 500 — a grind measured in months, not hours.
If you are chasing 100% completion anyway, the parts grind is the only route — our 100% completion checklist tracks it, and the Space Docker entity page has the source record.
The Mariachi Tornado — the story-mode rare spawn
The Tornado (Mariachi) is a classic Tornado carrying a full mariachi band in the bed — and it is one of the few genuinely rare single-player spawns. The GTA Wiki documents three ways it appears:
- Parking lot near the Ammu-Nation in Great Chaparral — it spawns there often when you are driving a rusted Tornado.
- 7:00 PM on a cliff near the Altruist Camp — it spawns surrounded by police and drives off if you do not reach it in time (this is the game's *Thelma & Louise* easter egg, with two NPCs driving the car off the cliff).
- Rarely, at the intersection of East Joshua Road and Senora Freeway.
There is also a guaranteed route: the mission The Civil Border Patrol features one, and it can be obtained and kept after completing the mission. The Mariachi Tornado is never sold on a website, so these spawns and the mission are the only ways into your garage.
The Dubsta 2 — the pre-modified spawn-only SUV
The Dubsta 2 (officially the "custom" variant of the Benefactor Dubsta) is what collectors call a pre-modified spawn: it appears in the world already fitted with black bullbars, black grilles, side steps and dark tint — modifications you would otherwise pay for. Chrome and brushed-gold NPC-modified examples are also documented. It is not a showroom purchase; you find it or you do not.
Documented story-mode sources: it appears in the mission Trevor Philips Industries, where you can keep it at the end if it survives (store it at Trevor's safehouse), and it spawns at the two off-road truck race meeting points. On enhanced versions, pre-modified Dubstas are part of the spawn set outside Los Santos Customs (the game's LS_CUSTOMS_MODDED spawn group) — the same behavior that makes them appear in GTA Online near LS Customs. Drive the area, scan the parking lots, and be ready to grab it before traffic despawns it.
The Romero Hearse — a funeral car that keeps disappearing from stores
The Romero Hearse flips the usual rarity pattern: it was never hard to find in story mode, and it became genuinely rare in GTA Online through *removal*. In single-player it is parked at fixed locations — the St. Brigid Baptist Church lot in Paleto Bay (near The Hen House) and the Strawberry Mortuary on Davis Avenue, among others — and it never spawns in traffic.
In GTA Online the history is the interesting part. The Hearse was added to Southern San Andreas Super Autos at $45,000 during the After Hours era, then removed from the website in the San Andreas Mercenaries update — the wave of removals that took dozens of vehicles out of the stores. It returned only temporarily for Halloween 2025 (weeks 1 through 5). As of September 2026 it is not listed for sale again, which means Online players are back to the documented rare-spawn route: on enhanced versions, riding as a passenger in another player's Romero past the known church locations "seeds" one to three Hearses into the parking lot. Slow, but verified.
How to make rare cars easier to find
A few patterns hold across all five vehicles:
- Check the store first. If a vehicle is on a website, it is by definition not rare — rarity claims only matter for spawn/event vehicles.
- Use the documented conditions, not luck. The Mariachi Tornado has time-and-place spawns; the Dubsta 2 has mission and location spawns; the Romero has seeded spawns. Driving the base variant (a rusted Tornado, a Dubsta) is documented to help several of these spawns.
- Save before you try. Rare spawns despawn, drive off or explode; a quick save before a 7:00 PM cliff visit costs nothing.
- Treat event windows as the only chance. The Halloween 2025 sale proved it for the Romero: when a removed vehicle returns to a store, that week is the moment to buy.
- Story mode is the reliable museum. Everything in story mode can be stored in a protagonist's garage without the Online economy's removal cycles — the story heists and our GTA 5 money guide cover the cash side of filling it.
One honest caveat: "rarest" is an editorial title, not a Rockstar stat. What is verifiable is that these five are absent from every purchase website and gated behind documented spawns, missions, rewards or ended events — which is exactly why they keep appearing on collector lists. All vehicle facts above are sourced and labeled on the interactive map and the vehicles hub; related picks in the same cluster live in our best cars guide.
FAQ
What is the rarest car in GTA 5?
In GTA Online, the Lost Slamvan: it is not sold anywhere and is obtainable only through the Diamond Casino Lucky Wheel (Mystery Reward ~14.3% vehicle category, ~0.72% Lost Slamvan). In story mode, the Space Docker (50 Spaceship Parts) and the Mariachi Tornado (rare spawns) are the standouts.
How do I get the Lost Slamvan?
Spin the Lucky Wheel at The Diamond Casino & Resort and land on a Mystery Reward that draws the Lost Slamvan — the only documented legitimate method. The odds are low, and it is not for sale on any in-game website.
How do I get the Space Docker?
Collect all 50 Spaceship Parts, complete Omega's mission The Final Frontier with Franklin, then pick up the Space Docker at Omega's garage; it then becomes a special vehicle available in each protagonist's garage. In GTA Online (enhanced versions) it is a Pegasus unlock at Arena War Sponsorship Tier 500.
Where does the Mariachi Tornado spawn?
Documented story-mode spawns: the parking lot near Ammu-Nation in Great Chaparral (often while driving a rusted Tornado), at 7:00 PM on a cliff near the Altruist Camp (it drives off — save first), and rarely at East Joshua Road and Senora Freeway. It can also be kept from the Civil Border Patrol mission.
Can I buy the Romero Hearse in GTA Online?
Not currently. It was $45,000 at Southern San Andreas Super Autos, was removed in the San Andreas Mercenaries update, and only returned temporarily during Halloween 2025 (weeks 1–5). Today it is a rare spawn again.
