Is GTA 6 Coming to Switch 2? A Former Rockstar Dev Explains Why It Probably Isn't

UNKNOWN

GTA VI is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026 — and there is still no Nintendo Switch 2 version. On September 25, 2026, a former Rockstar open-world designer explained why he does not expect that to change: in his view, the Switch 2 audience is not the GTA audience, and porting a release this large would mean a lot of extra work for a comparatively small return.

This page answers the Switch 2 question with the same labelling we use everywhere on GameCity Map: CONFIRMED facts from Rockstar and Take-Two, and clearly separated SPECULATION.

What Rockstar has confirmed

  • Release date: November 19, 2026 — CONFIRMED
  • Launch platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — CONFIRMED. Rockstar's official release information lists those two systems and nothing else.
  • Price: $79.99 standard edition, $99.99 Ultimate Edition — CONFIRMED (Take-Two, reported by Reuters)
  • No Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 version has been announced — this is a statement about the absence of any announcement, not a rumour we are dressing up as news.

That last point is the whole story: there is no Switch 2 release date to miss, because no Switch 2 version has ever been announced. Anything with a date attached to it online is not coming from Rockstar.

If you want the pieces that *are* locked in — preload, unlock times, editions — they are tracked separately in our pre-order and editions guide, our worldwide unlock schedule and the preload hub.

Why a former Rockstar dev says a Switch 2 port "doesn't make sense"

On September 25, 2026, GamesRadar+ published comments from Jérémy Hartvick, a former open-world designer at Rockstar who worked on GTA VI between 2017 and 2020. The quotes come from an interview with Kiwi Talkz (the video was set to private when the article went up).

His argument, in his own words:

  • "I don't believe it even makes sense, because I'm not sure the audience for GTA 6 is so much the audience for the Switch."
  • "If you're a GTA fan, you would probably buy a console on which GTA will come out."
  • Asked whether it makes sense to "go out of your way to probably deliver a subpar experience" when "anyone will buy a PS5 to get your game", his answer was blunt: "No."

He adds that Nintendo "exists in its own lane" — if you want Mario, Zelda or Kirby, you need a Switch 2 — and that while some Switch-only owners would probably like to try GTA VI, he expects them to be "a minority overall". He also concedes the idea is not "totally ludicrous", which is worth quoting precisely: this is an informed opinion from someone who worked on the game, not an announcement, and not a Rockstar statement. We label it SPECULATION.

The technical half of the argument

The second reason Hartvick gives is labour. A release this size would have to be "boiled down and optimised" for the Switch 2's hardware — extra work on a project that is already manpower-intensive, for a comparatively small audience.

Scale puts that in context. The Leonida map has been reported at roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's map, a figure that circulated widely during the August 27 Extended Look coverage. Rockstar has never published an official map size, so treat the multiplier as REPORTED / ESTIMATE, not a confirmed number — we keep the breakdown on our GTA 6 map size page, and the confirmed regions (Vice City, the Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga) on the interactive Leonida map.

GTA and Nintendo: what the history actually shows

Nintendo hardware and GTA are not strangers — they are simply not where the mainline games live:

  • Grand Theft Auto Advance — Game Boy Advance, 2004
  • Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars — Nintendo DS, 2009 (later ported to PSP and mobile)

Both were handheld spin-offs built around the hardware of the day. No mainline GTA has ever launched on a Nintendo home console. That is the pattern Hartvick's reasoning sits on top of: a Switch 2 version in 2026 would be a precedent, not a habit.

What about PC — the other missing platform?

PC is the other platform absent from the November 19 launch. There are reports that Rockstar could move a PC release up (September 2026, LEAKED / REPORTED — no Rockstar date), and on September 17 Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said the PC platform "is becoming increasingly important" for the company, while confirming nothing about GTA VI specifically. Our GTA 6 PC release page tracks those signals separately, with the same rule: no announced date, no invented date.

How we label the Switch 2 question

| Claim | Label |

| No Switch 2 version announced | CONFIRMED (no Rockstar announcement exists) |

| A Switch 2 port "doesn't make sense" | SPECULATION (ex-Rockstar designer, 25/09/2026) |

| A Switch 2 release date | UNKNOWN — none exists |

FAQ

Is GTA 6 coming to Nintendo Switch 2?

No Switch 2 version has been announced. Rockstar's official release information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for November 19, 2026.

Has Rockstar said anything about a Switch 2 version?

Not directly. The most detailed public comments come from a former Rockstar designer, Jérémy Hartvick, who worked on GTA VI from 2017 to 2020 and said a port "doesn't make sense" given the size of the game and the Switch audience.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC at launch?

No. GTA VI is console-only at launch. PC release reports exist but no PC date has been announced — see our GTA 6 PC page.

Will GTA 6 come to Switch 2 after launch?

UNKNOWN. Rockstar has neither announced nor ruled out a Nintendo version. Hartvick himself says the idea is not "totally ludicrous" — he simply expects the audience to be small.

Where can I follow the confirmed launch details?

Our GTA VI hub, the Leonida map and the confirmed features list are updated as official information lands.
