GTA 6 Online: Rockstar's Own Court Filings Mention a Confidential "32-Player Format"
CONFIRMEDPublished 2026-09-11 · ⏱ 7 min
For a year and a half, the only honest answer to "will GTA 6 have multiplayer?" has been: nobody outside Rockstar knows. That has not changed — but a set of legal documents Rockstar and Take-Two sent to journalists this week now puts one specific detail on the public record: an internal, "highly confidential" online format built around 32 players. Here is what the filings actually say, what they do not, and how to read it with GTA VI ten weeks from launch.
What Rockstar's filings actually say
The documents come from the final hearing of a legal battle over the firing of 34 developers last year. In Rockstar's own submission, the studio states that a feature the dismissed staff were allegedly discussing on a union-run Discord server was an:
- "online 32 player format which was highly confidential at that time."
The filing also quotes the witness evidence of Jennifer Kolbe, a Rockstar studio director: *"To see team members sharing details regarding online player numbers for a confidential project, not yet in the public domain, was extraordinarily alarming."*
Rockstar then connects that alarm to a separate episode — *"just a few months earlier there had been a damaging leak of design decisions and main character names"* — the 2022 material that spoiled part of the GTA VI reveal. Read together, the filings confirm that, internally, Rockstar treats an online component for its next crime game as a real, in-development project with a player-count it wanted kept secret.
To be precise about the label: this is CONFIRMED as to the documents — they were provided by Rockstar and Take-Two themselves, and are reported by Rock Paper Shotgun on September 11, 2026. It is not an official product announcement.
A union dispute, not a product reveal
Context matters here, because the framing of the story is legal, not marketing:
- The accusation. The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) says Rockstar fired organisers in a union-busting campaign.
- Rockstar's defence. The company says the dismissals were about staff sharing "confidential information on a public forum" — a claim these filings are designed to support.
- The timetable. The final hearing is set to run until at least October 15, 2026.
There is an irony worth naming, and Rock Paper Shotgun names it: a company arguing that a feature was too sensitive to be public has now drawn fresh attention to it in filings it chose to send to the press. But that is a legal strategy, not a reveal — Rockstar is trying to justify the firings, not tease a mode.
"32 players" would not be a jump from GTA Online
If the number sounds familiar, it is. GTA Online already supports 32-player sessions — 30 active players plus two spectators — so a 32-player GTA 6 online would match, not exceed, the current ceiling rather than represent a leap forward. That matters for expectation-setting: nothing here describes a bigger lobby, a new genre, or a departure from the structure players already know.
It is also not the first time the figure has surfaced. Earlier reporting based on a People Make Games examination of the physical tribunal documents already described a "32 player session" mentioned in the leaked Discord messages. This week's filings matter because they move the detail from "reported leak" into documents Rockstar itself put forward — a meaningful shift in status, even if the underlying number is unchanged.
What is CONFIRMED, LEAKED, and UNKNOWN
Keeping the three labels straight is the whole point of how we cover GTA VI:
- CONFIRMED — the existence and content of the court documents; that Rockstar internally discussed an online product with a set player count; and that Rockstar's public-facing language still describes GTA VI as a "single-player experience."
- LEAKED — the specific 32-player figure, which originates from confidential internal messages rather than a Rockstar announcement.
- UNKNOWN — whether the confidential online service is definitively "GTA 6 Online"; when any online component launches; whether it arrives at or near the November 19 console launch; how it is monetised; and whether it replaces or sits alongside the existing GTA Online.
Rockstar has published no date and no product page for a GTA 6 online mode. Any headline that states otherwise is asserting more than the documents support.
What it means before November 19
Three things are worth tracking, and only one of them is about multiplayer:
- The online question stays open — on purpose. Rockstar's habit is to let the single-player game breathe before it says anything about online. Nothing in these filings changes the fact that, today, there is no confirmed GTA 6 Online.
- The base game is locked in. GTA VI arrives November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at $79.99 (Standard), with preload beginning November 12. See our preorder & editions guide and the worldwide unlock schedule.
- The PC question is still open too. There is still no announced PC version, though reports have suggested Rockstar could move it up — labelled LEAKED in our PC release report. Multiplayer and PC are the two doors Rockstar has left closed; this week cracked one of them, no more than that.
Everything officially confirmed — characters, the city of Vice City, Leonida's six regions, vehicles and launch logistics — stays indexed on our confirmed features page and plotted on the interactive map.
Update — September 17, 2026: a 2027 window for GTA 6 multiplayer, from Twitch's CEO
At Tokyo Game Show, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told Bloomberg that Twitch expects "an even bigger" bump "next year when they launch multiplayer", and Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick confirmed the same day that GTA Online will keep being supported after GTA 6. No multiplayer mode has been announced by Rockstar. Treat the 2027 window as SPECULATION (a third-party claim) and the continuing GTA Online support as CONFIRMED. Full analysis.
FAQ
Did Rockstar confirm GTA 6 Online?
No. These are court filings in an employment dispute, not a product announcement. They show Rockstar internally discussing a confidential online project; they do not confirm a launched or dated mode.
How many players will GTA 6's online mode support?
The filings reference a confidential "online 32 player format." Rockstar has never officially stated a player count, so 32 is best treated as LEAKED information drawn from the documents.
Would 32 players be an upgrade over GTA Online?
No. GTA Online already runs 32-player sessions (30 active plus two spectators), so the figure would match the existing standard rather than exceed it.
When does GTA 6 Online come out?
UNKNOWN. Rockstar has announced no date for any online component. What is confirmed is the base game: November 19, 2026, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, $79.99 Standard.
Is GTA 6 Online the same as GTA Online?
Not established. Rockstar has not said whether the new game's online service would be a new product or an evolution of the existing GTA Online, which continues to receive updates.
