GTA 6 Preorders: PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S Split Explained (September 2026)
CONFIRMEDPublished 2026-10-01 · ⏱ 6 min
Xbox has publicly pushed back on reports that GTA VI preorders are heavily skewed toward PlayStation 5. On September 24, 2026, Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball said Microsoft's internal data shows its share of GTA VI preorders matching its share of the console market — and that the game is "breaking records" for Xbox.
That statement is confirmed and quoted in full below. The split itself is not. Neither Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony nor Microsoft publishes per-platform GTA VI preorder numbers, so every percentage circulating in the press is an estimate. This guide separates what is documented from what is inferred.
What Xbox actually said
The exchange started with reporting by The Verge's Tom Warren on this week's Xbox layoffs and studio reorganization, which said the PS5's lead on GTA VI preorders was "ringing yet more alarm bells" about Xbox as a platform.
Ball replied directly. This is his statement in full:
"Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of preorders to be matching our share of the console market."
Read carefully, that is a *share* argument, not a unit-count argument. Xbox is not claiming more GTA VI preorders than PlayStation — it is claiming its slice of GTA VI preorders is proportional to its slice of the console market.
The console math behind the 2:1 estimate
Why can "matching our share of the console market" still mean far fewer GTA VI preorders than PS5? Because the console market itself is lopsided.
- Sony had sold more than 95 million PS5 units as of June 30, 2026 — a figure Sony announces publicly.
- Microsoft has not published Xbox Series X|S sales numbers in years, so there is no official denominator on its side.
- Analysts cited by IGN put the PS5 ahead of the combined Xbox Series range by at least 2:1.
If that ratio is roughly right, Xbox matching its console-market share would still translate to something like one GTA VI preorder for Xbox for every two on PS5.
Where the "PS5 dominance" headline came from
Before Ball's statement, a steady run of analysis had built the PS5-leads narrative:
- August 18 — TweakTown, citing analysis, reported GTA VI nearing $500 million in preorder revenue, with about 77% on PS5. Both figures are analytical estimates, not Rockstar data.
- August 31 — TechPowerUp reported GTA VI preorders jumped 436% in a single day after the August 27 "Extended Look" premiered on Netflix, with PS5 leading. The surge was reported widely, including by Mac Observer and Notebookcheck.
- Separately, an Esquire India figure put PlayStation at roughly 3.51 million copies in preorders — again an estimate.
The direction is consistent — PlayStation leading — but none of these numbers is official, and they do not all use the same method.
Why PlayStation leads GTA VI preorders
Three documented factors, none of them a mystery:
- Sony has leaned hard into GTA VI. PS5 branding has appeared across GTA VI marketing, and Sony has made the game a centrepiece of its 2026 holiday platform pitch.
- Official PlayStation GTA VI hardware exists. Rockstar and Sony announced a limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controller at $84.99, with preorders opening September 10, 2026 — a PlayStation-only product that pulls attention, and bundles, toward PS5.
- Install base. Sony's PS5 total is public and large; Xbox's is undisclosed and, per analysts, smaller.
What we cannot say is that either version plays or looks better. Rockstar has not published a technical comparison between the two consoles, and there is no GTA VI comparison from Digital Foundry yet.
What this means if you have not preordered yet
Practical points, all confirmed:
- GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Both platforms get it on day one.
- US prices are $79.99 (Standard) and $99.99 (Ultimate) — see our GTA 6 preorder and editions guide.
- Preload is reported to open November 12, 2026, one week before launch — full details on our GTA 6 preload guide.
- There is no announced PC version, so if you are choosing hardware today, it is a console choice.
- The feature list behind these editions is tracked on our GTA 6 confirmed features page.
If you are picking a console specifically for GTA VI, the preorder split tells you where the player base is going — not which version is technically better. Our GTA 6 interactive map stays neutral on platforms and labels every location by confidence and source.

FAQ
Are GTA 6 preorders really selling twice as well on PS5?
Analysts cited by IGN put the PS5 at least 2:1 ahead on GTA VI preorders, and earlier revenue estimates leaned even more heavily PS5. Nothing official supports or denies that ratio — Xbox's own position is only that its preorder share matches its console-market share.
Did Xbox confirm GTA 6 preorders are breaking records?
Yes. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball said on September 24, 2026 that GTA VI "is breaking records for XBOX" and that more records are expected through the fall. That statement is confirmed; the underlying numbers are not published.
Does GTA 6 play better on PS5?
There is no official technical comparison between the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, and no Digital Foundry analysis of GTA VI yet. Anyone claiming a definitive performance difference is going beyond the published record.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC?
Not announced. Rockstar has confirmed only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for the November 19, 2026 launch. Reports suggesting a faster-than-usual PC release are unconfirmed.
Which console should I buy for GTA 6?
Both get the game on day one. PlayStation currently carries the larger preorder share and more GTA VI-branded hardware, while Xbox says it is satisfied with its own preorder performance. Our preorder and editions guide covers what each edition includes.
