GTA 6's Writers on Lucia, Raul and Building a Living Leonida

CONFIRMED

Published 2026-10-05 · ⏱ 7 min

Rockstar's narrative team has gone on the record about how Grand Theft Auto VI is written — and the through-line is a studio that deliberately refuses to satirise the news of the day. The comments appear in issue 27 of the fashion title Love Magazine, released on Monday, October 5, 2026, which put GTA VI on its cover with an exclusive developer feature.

It expands the preview images that surfaced days earlier, which we covered when four new GTA 6 screenshots put Jason and Lucia's relationship in focus. Now the writers talk about Lucia, a mentor character named Raul, and the philosophy behind Leonida — the fictional state standing in for Florida.

What Love Magazine issue 27 revealed — CONFIRMED

  • Issue 27 of Love Magazine was released on Monday, October 5, 2026, with a GTA VI cover, an illustrated feature and new images of the game.
  • Named Rockstar staff are quoted: Alexa D'Agostino (writer), Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern, Rupert Humphries (senior vice president of narrative) and James Horton (open-world writer).
  • A mentor character called Raul is confirmed, described as carrying the "local and criminal knowledge" that Jason and Lucia lack in Vice City.
  • Release date unchanged: November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Writing Lucia: "perfectly imperfect"

Alexa D'Agostino, a writer at Rockstar, told Love she drew on the women she knows:

"When it came to writing Lucia, I thought of the women I know — my mother was an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, close to Lucia's hometown of Liberty City. I thought about the way she raised me: rowdy, kind, but not to take any shit. I related a lot to Lucia and writing her came very naturally to me."

D'Agostino frames Lucia as a fully realised person rather than a checklist of traits:

"When you are focusing on writing a fully realised person with their own wants, you're going to get something perfectly imperfect — with clichés, but also undeniably real. That's how you get a woman that can stand tall next to the likes of Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic."

That last line is the studio's clearest statement of intent yet for its first female lead — placing her alongside Red Dead Redemption 2's Arthur Morgan and GTA IV's Niko Bellic. Our GTA 6 characters guide tracks everything confirmed about Lucia and Jason.

The actress behind Lucia is still unconfirmed — UNKNOWN

Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern told Love that the actress portraying Lucia "brought a lot to the character," chosen so both leads could be "tough, badass, cool" — vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other. Rockstar will not confirm who voices Lucia: the identity is UNKNOWN, and any name circulating online stays SPECULATION until the studio says otherwise.

Raul: the mentor who knows Vice City

Raul is described as an older mentor figure who embodies Vice City — the one holding the "local and criminal knowledge" that Jason and Lucia have neither of on arrival. Against the game's American Dream of a mortgage rather than a mansion, a mentor who already speaks the city's language is the shortcut the pair don't have. Whether Raul is friend, fixer or something more dangerous is UNKNOWN.

Why Rockstar won't satirise real-world politics

The most quoted part of the feature is Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, explaining why GTA VI lampoons its own world rather than the news cycle (as reported by Eurogamer):

"If you go back to previous GTAs, there's never really been much focus on national politics. The rise of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act were pretty central to GTA 4, but that was mainly because post-9/11 New York was a real frontline for those issues."

The logic is durability — a game built over "years and years" cannot be dated on day one:

"We don't want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement or anything like that. … If there's a trend blowing up for six months, you need to see it for what it is and not jump on the bandwagon."

Florida, though, gives Rockstar plenty to work with, and it reaches players through more than face-to-face encounters:

"There is so much to work with, and we have really tried to build out our world — filling it with all the characters and culture wars necessary to make it feel alive. … You can see a sign for an election, receive a robocall from a campaign, or hear a commercial on the radio. And then we have some great political talk shows on the radio too."

And the punchline, delivered in the feature:

"If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today's world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face. Otherwise, you could just go outside and live in the real world!"

Humphries calls Red Dead Redemption 2 "essentially a historical recreation," but says GTA VI uses "a lot of the same tools" to make "everything satirical, larger than life, and more grotesque." Our breakdown of the GTA 6 story structure and its Red Dead Redemption 2 parallels digs into that.

The writing machine behind a "living" Leonida

James Horton, who writes for the open world, calls the job "profoundly technical":

"We dreamed a lot bigger this time around. We started a new writing team in LA with pedestrian dialogue as their sole focus and sat them alongside a dedicated production team with the same mandate."

Rockstar describes hundreds of writers: a pedestrian-dialogue unit in Los Angeles, plus advertising and comedy writers across New York, Los Angeles and London. And none of it is filler, Humphries says: "None of us see it as background! It's all part of the tapestry of the game." You can already walk the regions on the interactive Leonida map; the confirmed lore lives in our Vice City guide and Leonida guide.
