GTA 6 Leonida Guide: The State, Its Confirmed Regions and Map Size
CONFIRMEDPublished 2026-09-05 · ⏱ 8 min
GTA 6 is not just Vice City. When the game launches on November 19, 2026, it takes place in Leonida — an entire fictional state inspired by Florida, with Vice City as its neon-soaked urban heart and five more officially presented regions beyond it. Rockstar's own story description for the Extended Look puts it plainly: Jason and Lucia are caught "in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida." This guide collects everything confirmed about the state, what the leaked map claims (labeled LEAKED), and what is still unknown.
What is Leonida in GTA 6?
Leonida is the fictional Florida of the Grand Theft Auto universe — the same relationship San Andreas has to California or Liberty City to New York. It is the first brand-new state in a mainline GTA game of the HD era, confirmed by Rockstar with Trailer 1 in December 2023 and reaffirmed by the Extended Look's official description.
- A state, not a city — Vice City is one region inside Leonida, the way Los Santos sits inside San Andreas.
- A satirical Florida — preview coverage describes Leonida as a satirical reinterpretation of Florida: beaches, mangroves, tropical keys, swamps, endless highways, luxury developments — and the human chaos the internet calls "Florida Man."
- More than coastline — dense city, swamp, industrial and agricultural interior, and a northern national park. Official details are tracked on our GTA 6 confirmed features page, and Jason and Lucia's story across the state is covered on the characters page.
How big is Leonida? What Rockstar has said
Rockstar has not published official dimensions, but the preview wave that followed the Extended Look (outlets and creators invited to Rockstar North) produced the clearest comparisons yet:
- Roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's world — VICE reports the studio confirmed this scale in the new previews; Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut told The New York Times (via GamingBolt) the world is "three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area."
- Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos — the standout detail of the same briefings, reported by VICE and earlier by creator TGG.
- "A big map, a very big map" — Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head, told IGN in an exclusive interview, calling GTA VI "the largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex world we have ever built."
- Roughly 80 hours to complete — Eurogamer reports the map at about twice the size of GTA 5's, with around 80 hours to complete.
- A satellite-style pause map — the pause-menu map now uses detailed satellite-style imagery (VICE).
Caveat: these figures are Rockstar's comparative statements as relayed by outlets — no single official measurement exists. Our map size hub tracks everything on record, and confirmed locations are on the interactive map.
The regions of Leonida: what Rockstar presented
Rockstar's official map materials reportedly present six regions — Vice City plus five more (per MeriStation's breakdown of confirmed locations, matching VICE's list):
- Vice City — the modern-Miami heart of the state: beaches, palm trees, neon and Art Deco rebuilt around today's skyline. Named areas include Ocean Beach (the Miami Beach / Ocean Drive counterpart), Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka Market and VC Port (cruise industry). Everything verified about the city is in our GTA 6 Vice City guide.
- Leonida Keys — the state's answer to the Florida Keys: tropical islands linked by long bridges over the ocean, with boats, fishing, bars — and a criminal underbelly. Preview reporting ties Jason to this region, where he works for Brian Heder, a veteran smuggler moving contraband through his shipyard (per MeriStation).
- Grassrivers — Leonida's Everglades: vast water, mangroves, stilt homes and big-propeller boats. Alligators are everywhere — though Rockstar warns they are not necessarily the most dangerous thing there.
- Port Gellhorn — a former resort area fallen on hard times: cheap motels, closed attractions and run-down malls, where a less glamorous economy now thrives. The name first surfaced in the September 2022 leak and is now officially part of the game — see our Port Gellhorn location page.
- Ambrosia — central Leonida's industrial and agricultural region, dominated by the Allied Crystal sugar refinery (a nod to Florida's inland sugar country). The corporation provides most jobs — while a biker gang controls less legal activities.
- Mount Kalaga National Park — forested northern region of rivers and open nature, offering fishing, hunting and off-road driving, and home to people who avoid cities — from rural communities to government-hostile radicals.
What the leaked map claims (LEAKED)
In August 2026, a group known as Cyberleek posted what it presented as the full Leonida map, days before the Extended Look premiere; Rockstar responded with DMCA takedowns (Times of India). The leak is not official, and this county structure has never been confirmed by Rockstar:
- The leaked map is full color (not the classic black-and-white style), has no Florida-style panhandle, and was estimated at roughly twice the size of GTA V's map.
- It shows five counties: Lummox County (north, dense forest, little infrastructure, home to Mount Kalaga), Leonard County (built around a central waterbody feeding quiet suburbs), Kelly County (open land with a western bay), Mariana County (swamp and bayou, with a road to an isolated off-coast airstrip) and Vice Dale County (dense infrastructure, two runways — the map's urban heart).
Overlap between the leaked counties and the official regions is community interpretation, not confirmation. We host no leaked assets.
What is still UNKNOWN about Leonida
- Exact dimensions — no official area figure.
- The official county structure — Rockstar presents regions, not county boundaries; the five county names come from the leak.
- District-level maps beyond Vice City's named areas, and traversal times across the state.
- How the state connects to any online mode — nothing official (see labeled notes on the GTA 6 hub).
The Extended Look — 26 minutes of official PS5 footage across Vice City and Leonida — is broken down scene by scene in our full recap, with the video embedded on the extended-look hub.
Update — September 19, 2026: what the 192 GB Rockstar archive means for the map
A large archive of Rockstar development data surfaced publicly on September 18, 2026, and dataminers have loaded an early, unfinished GTA 6 map — grey-box data reportedly dating to 2015 — into GTA 5, including a Vice City Airport blockout. This is LEAKED material, not official documentation, and it does not represent the shipping map: the regions listed above remain the ones Rockstar has actually confirmed. Full breakdown of the leak.
Update — September 29, 2026: Game Informer issue 382 is out
Game Informer's 14-page GTA VI cover story is live, and Rockstar has released 12 new screenshots with it. Confirmed in Rockstar's own words: hurricanes and tropical storms, a re-engineered localized weather system (rainbows, persistent puddles, simulated wind), a map about twice the size of GTA V's (Aaron Garbut), more than 170 animal species with RDR2-style tracking, and a long list of side activities. Release date unchanged: November 19, 2026. Full breakdown: GTA 6 Game Informer Issue 382.
